{"id":64,"date":"2013-04-28T11:29:44","date_gmt":"2013-04-28T11:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/irip.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=64"},"modified":"2013-05-03T15:39:27","modified_gmt":"2013-05-03T15:39:27","slug":"sea-turtle-nesting-beach-pollution-assessment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/irip.sdsu.edu\/?page_id=64","title":{"rendered":"Sea Turtle Nesting Beach Pollution Assessment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #4989c7;\"><strong>SEA TURLE NESTING BEACH POLLUTION ASSESSMENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>six opportunities in Panama and Costa Rica<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nAll six interns\u00a0will be\u00a0implementing the NOAA Pollution surveys weekly from July 1 to mid August 2013 and collecting data on nesting turtles at night.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4989c7;\"><strong>Locations:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 interns at Tortuguero, Costa Rica;<\/li>\n<li>2 at\u00a0Guanacaste, Costa Rica;<\/li>\n<li>2 at Isla Canas, Panama.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>We\u00a0aim to have final papers to SDSU and UCSD on Aug 13<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4989c7;\"><strong>Hourly Breakdown of Credits:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>June \u2013 August:<\/strong><\/span> 5 days a week work in the field for the host organization around 4-6 hours a day for a minimum of 150 hours.<br \/>\n3 days a week (or all in one day), collect data for your paper, write your journal, for a total of 100 hours.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4989c7;\"><strong>Scientific Concepts Covered:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The scientific method<\/li>\n<li>Empirical quantitative and qualitative data collection<\/li>\n<li>Interviewing experts for data<\/li>\n<li>Hypothesis testing<\/li>\n<li>Random sampling<\/li>\n<li>Extrapolation<\/li>\n<li>Data storage, exploration, and descriptive statistics<\/li>\n<li>Regression analysis<\/li>\n<li>Ethical animal handling<\/li>\n<li>Ethics in science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Presentation of results written, graphic, web-based and oral<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #4989c7;\"><strong>Schedule and Homework:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>April 14<\/strong> \u2013 Mandatory Skype Orientation 11 am to 3 pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 29<\/strong> &#8211; First Scholarship essays due<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>During the internship, every Weds email, Skype or call Katherine in San Diego with your progress.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>July 7<\/strong> \u2013 Homework assignment #1. Email your database in excel to Katherine<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 21<\/strong> &#8211; Homework assignment #2. Email your database in excel to Katherine with graphs of your data<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aug 3<\/strong> \u2013 Homework assignment #3 Draft scholarship essay and power points and database due to Katherine<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before Aug 7<\/strong> \u2013 Perform accumulation data collection<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aug 7<\/strong> \u2013 Stop data collection. Skype call with Katherine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aug 8<\/strong>&#8211; Give the power point presentation to your supervisor, other volunteers, and the neighbors or friends who may be interested. Write down their comments and questions. Katherine will solicit supervisor evaluations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aug 13<\/strong> &#8211; Second scholarship essay, database, and power point with corrections incorporated (worth $250)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aug 16<\/strong>&#8211; SDSU Bio grades issued<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aug 30<\/strong> \u2013 Final journals, databases, power points, and 15 page papers due with statistical results, supervisor comments, conservation recommendations, photos, etc. incorporated.
